1975 Norton Commando 850cc Mk 3
Vehicle Description
I am selling my 1975 Norton I bought on 8/3/1979, I am the second owner. The bike looks and drives as new.
On 6/13/1994 with 12241 miles on the bike I took it to a professional restorer and had the bike redone from the frame up including:
1. rebuilt starter to 4 brush instead of 2 brush unit
2. rebuilt top part of engine including new rings
3. installed valve to keep oil from draining into sump
4. altered battery compartment to accommodate larger battery
5. sent the odometer and tachometer to have them calibrated in England
Since the restoration the odometer was set to 0 and it now shows I have driven it 2427 miles since 1994.
Bike can be inspected at my location before auction ends. The winning bidder can inspect the bike before taking delivery or shipping, and if you are not satisfied, don't take the bike.
I will gladly help if you want to ship the bike. Payment in full to be made before bike leaves.
I HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL QUESTIONS AND I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THE FOLLOWING;
The man who restored this bike starting riding early and worked as a mechanic at 14 yrs old. At 18 he opened his own shop. By 1955 he owned a motorcycle dealership selling various brands including new Nortons. His store sold this bike new to the first owner. He later started restoring bikes (primarily Triumphs, Nortons, Moto Guzzi, etc.) and I used him because it was obvious he did excellent work and he knew more about motorcycles than anyone I had ever met at that time, or since.
The restoration had too many things to list but I told him to fix the bike like it was his own and he was going to keep it . For example; the gas tank is original (steel) but was taken off before repainting and chemically sealed inside (3 times) to prevent any problems in the future, electronic ignition and coil were added, the transmission was opened and second gear showed slight wear, so it was replaced, etc. At the end I spent $6732.11 in 1994 on the restoration, the receipt will be here for the winning bidder to see.
Since that time I take the bike in regularly to the same mechanic to maintain it (once or twice a year), NO OTHER MECHANIC TOUCHES THIS BIKE. Several people seem worried that I had the bike restored and it has just sat, that is not the case. Besides, the trip to his shop to talk motorcycles and see the bikes he is restoring is one of the highlights of the year for me.
The reason the bike has so few miles is because it was my first motorcycle and after the restoration I only rode it on special occasions. I have owned 9 other motorcycles over the years (once I got up to 4 at one time) and I rode the other bikes more often. I now own a Triumph Trophy 900 I ride often.
Several people have told me you cannot really see the condition of the bike in pictures and that is true. That is the reason I WANT this bike inspected before you take final delivery by you or some outside source if possible. This bike is at its best in person where you can see the great job my restorer did. The bike starts with the kick or electric starter and does not smoke. It drives and shifts like it is suppossed to.
BID WITH CONFIDENCE If you are the winning bidder and you are not happy with the bike in person, I do not expect you to take it and I certainly do not want any of your money. I am happy to sell the bike this way because I also have bought things in the past and the pictures did not show the true condition. This bike is the real deal and I welcome you to inspect it.
If this is your first classic bike, this is a great model to own because it has disc brakes, rubber mounts on the engine to reduce vibration, electric start, and it shifts on the left (American) side.
I do not intend to put a buy it now price on the auction or end it early, and there is no reserve.
I appreciate the interest in the bike and I apologize if I did not put enough information on the listing at the beginning. Thanks, and please ask any questions you might have and I will be happy to answer.
